1870. As prisoner in a Havana jail
Sentenced to six-years' imprisonment for the crime of disloyalty to the Spanish Crown, Martí served several months at hard labor, and although he was reprieved and deported to Spain, he bore on his leg for the remainder of his life a wound which never healed, caused by the shackle he wore in jail.
